In the process of trying to give back to the community where our bike shop is located, we noticed an area of assistance that is greatly needed.
We were donated 4 beautiful picnic benches for the back yard of the shop to hold special events like, teaching children to repair their bikes and more.
Jack the Bike Man, Inc. along with St John Fisher Catholic Church has been serving a hot lunch every Thursday to the men along Broadway who are unemployed and are seeking employment. Most of these men are Immigrants from Central America and are trying to support their families back home.
We have also offered free Medical screening in the past to help them out with other organizations.
Now so many of these men who want to speak, write and understand English. More than 90 men have filled out a form wanting to be admitted into our program. About 50 of these men have been interviewed to see at what level a class they should be enrolled into. We have volunteers that are ready to jump in to help.
The next hurdle for us is the needed books. They are expensive. They will cost about $30.00 per student. Many of the men do not have the money for the books but are willing to pay what they have when they get some small jobs to do for money. Our idea is to front the needed books when needed and as the men pay back the loan for the books; it will allow us to purchase more books. These new books will be offered to more students with the same purchase plan.
Now we are asking for help as the money for this can not come out of the Bicycle Charity Budget. It must be separated. If anyone wants to help with this worthwhile project, please, contact Mr. Jack Hairston, aka, Jack the Bike Man.
